Feed the Need

October 17th, 2011

Please help ADFAC help our community through the 5th Annual Feed the Need event.  This is a weeklong event where nearly 20 local restaurants donate a portion of their sales on a particular day(s) to assist ADFAC with our mission of helping those in need throughout our extended community.

I would appreciate your helping us spread the word about this event through email, Facebook, or simply word of mouth .  The more people who patronize these generous restaurants – the greater the financial support for ADFAC.  All you have to do is pick a restaurant and make plans to eat out next week.

A quick look at the participating restaurants is available on the attached flyer.  Many of these restaurants are locally owned and we love that this is a Win Win for our participating restaurants, donors and ultimately the clients ADFAC serves.

If you aren’t familiar with ADFAC, please visit our website:  www.adfac.org or the Feed The Need page:  http://www.adfac.org/feedtheneed.html

And, we’d love for you to ‘like’ us on Facebook:  http://www.facebook.com/#!/adfac

Big Brothers Big Sisters Named #1 Nonprofit by GuideStar

October 13th, 2011

Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee is proud to announce that our organization, on a national level, has earned Philanthropedia’s top ranking on a list of “most recommended, high-impact national non-profits serving at-risk youth.”

A subsidiary of GuideStar, Philanthropedia assembles their rankings through the surveying of foundation professionals, researchers, academics, nonprofit senior staffers and other experts on their views of charities’ impact and organizational strengths.           GuideStar is the industry leader in nonprofit data, providing information to donors, partners, governing agencies, and others to enable them to make informed decisions with regard to charitable giving.

Backed by research supporting its efficiency, Big Brothers Big Sisters holds itself accountable for helping children who face adversity achieve positive, measurable outcomes, including educational success, higher aspirations and confidence, improved relationships and risky behavior avoidance. The organization relies on funding to carefully make mentoring matches and provide ongoing support to mentors, mentees and their families, helping sustain the long-term, successful relationships unique to its programs.

“We are honored to be recognized as the leading nonprofit serving the population of young children who face adversity in their daily lives,” said Myra Yateman, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee. “Our Staff strives to provide at-risk children with professionally supported mentoring relationships that aim to ultimately change their lives for the better.”

Our first place ranking was the result of recommendations from 88 national at-risk youth experts with an average of 19 years of experience in the field. These experts looked at nonprofit

organizations that worked with children they considered to be “at-risk,” including some involved with the foster care or the juvenile justice system; runaways and homeless youth; kids who have dropped out of school or at risk of not graduating; and teen parents. Big Brothers Big Sisters, which primarily serves children of single, low income or incarcerated parents, ranked first in only nine organizations recommended in the area of at-risk youth.
